The objective of this study was to clarify stress and experienced by middle-aged people in resumption of work after surgery for stomach cancer, and to evaluate the relationship between stress. In this research, I use The Betty Neuman Systems Model, which deals with whole aspects of human. The subjects were 9 patients aged 30-64 years with a BMI less than 18.5 who resumed work after surgery for gastric cancer. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews, and were analyzed. The contents of stress were: 1) A marked loss of weight associated with a marked reduction in food intake and severe sense of physical, mental, and psychological fatigue; 2) awkwardness and uneasiness in dealing with colleagues because of reduced work efficiency due to physical weakness after resumption of work; and 3) continuation of work by controlling the fear of recurrence or metastasis of stomach cancer. Nurses are expected to provide information necessary for patients after surgery for stomach cancer to resume working, education intended to make them prepared for long-term self-care after discharge, and support to mitigate stress and to strengthen to help them reestablish their self-images.
