The Garden of Eden, Ernest Hemingway's posthumous work, was edited by Tom Jenksa, anonymous editor, and published from Charles Scribner's Sons, in 1986. Background of this story is South France in about the middle of 1920's. And the strange relation of David Bourne, Catherine Bourne and Marita is described in this. David and Catherine were having happy 'the paradise' life in hotel at le Grau du Roi at first, but their married life begin to break soon. When David and Catherine visited la Napoule, they met Marita. A Cause of collapse of David and Catherine's 'the paradise' is Marita. The greatest cause, however, is that they aim to construct each 'the paradise'. I want to consider about 'the paradise' in The Garden of Eden. David was satisfied 'the paradise' life with Catherine in hotel at le Grau du Roi. Because he had thought of none of writing here nor of anything but being with Catherine whom he loved and was married to and he did not have the sudden deadly clarity that had always come after intercourse. They would only eat and drink and make love again. Catherine, however, was bored 'the paradise' as mere David's wife. David began to establish self-world as writer, so Catherine would be herself, and her wish was realized by a way of being a boy. When Catherine became a boy, she thought to do anything. Then she tried make David her girl, and would create new 'the paradise'. That was reversal of sex. But David rejected being her girl, and he was establishing his world as writer still more. When Catherine tried to shut David into her world, she call the devil things about self-action. Catherine understood that she should be a girl to shut David into her world, and be a boy to create self-world. But Catherine couldn't be David's wife. When David and Catherine tried find out each the sel-significance for being, their married life began to break, and they lost their 'the paradise' at the same time. When they lost their 'the paradise', David began to construct self-world as writer, but Catherine struggled with her mind that would be a girl and a boy. At that time they met Marita. Catherine tried create new 'the paradise' among David, Catherine and Marita. Marita, however, tried be David's and Catherine's too, and she would show the selfsignificance for being. Catherine realized that David's heart was fascinated by Marita, and Catherine lost new 'the paradise'. David succeeded in his world as writer, and got new 'the paradise' with Marita. But Catherine couldn't get her 'the paradise', and failed in self-realization. Hemingway showed difficulties that women would get sel-realization at that time in this story.
