Kageyama and Ura (2002) demonstrated, from semantic viewpoints, that "peculiar" passive is acceptable only if the predicate involved is an individual-level predicate ; nevertheless, their explanation of the syntactic behaviors of peculiar passive is obscure in that their theory cannot account for the following questions : (I) Where does the theta-role of the subject, which is alleged to be base-generated at the Spec of IP, come from? (II) What role does the passive morpheme play in peculiar passive? This paper, thus, aims at resolving these problems by showing that the A-bar movement of pro, which is triggered by the existence of the passive morpheme, is involved in peculiar passive ; whereby, the subject at the Spec of IP can inherit a theta-role from pro by way of predication a la Heim and Kratzer (1998).
