The aim of this paper is to investigate which views on the preposition except/but by Kunihiro et al. (2002) and Thomson & Martinet (1986) are right ; the former is that except is semantically more emphatic than but, the latter is that but is semantically more emphatic than except. The conclusion is that they are both right because of the following fact ; in the context where except/but means "exception" except is more emphatic than but, while in the context where except/but means "condition" but is more emphatic than except.
