Thomas Middleton's A Chaste Maid in Cheapside is typical of city comedies, which flourished between 1603 and 1613. City comedies of this period stage London dwellers in the changing commercial world of early modern London, and especially Chaste Maid vividly portrays human relations reduced to commodity transactions. The play embraces a complex negotiation between the city and the country, the citizens and the gentry. The negotiation is conducted on the basis of sex-money equation, and the characters driven by the desire for money, property, and sex, are to be integrated in the market economic system. Chaste Maid, which can be read in economical metaphors, represents the major social and economical upheavals in London at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
