This article is an attempt at suggesting that the Lord Chamberlain, who had authority over the theatre, and the managers of London commercial theatres during the inter-war period shared the common purpose of preserving middle-class standards in the West End theatre. Section 1 of the article outlines the social background in which the traditional boundaries among social classes had been dissolving, and section 2 gives the reasons why the management of West End theatre were colluding with the Lord Chamberlain to maintain the status quo. In section 3, some examples are given from the archival materials of theatrical censorship that show the censor's incessant efforts in eliminating vulgar elements from scripts. It can be said that, by preventing the speech and manners in the scripts from transgressing the boundaries of middle-class respectability, both the censor and those censored tried to make a clear distinction between social classes.
