Sherwood Anderson, who was to gain a reputation with Winesburg, Ohio, suddenly left his position as manager of a manufacturing company, apparently feeling disgusted at the nature of the business world. Later, in The Modern Writer, he pointed out that mechanization brings about standardization, and in his introduction to Perhaps Women he expressed his worry about modern man losing his manhood because of his reliance upon the machine. According to a woman who appears in his Puzzled America, America is more cheerful than Europe. She eagerly expects America to be a country without any dictators or creeping fear. Home Town, which was published the year before his death, deals with his tender affection for life in small towns. By analyzing both his fictional and nonfictional works, this paper aims to ascertain how Anderson saw his native country and formed his view of America, taking into consideration the effect of his stay in France.
