The background for this study was related to the growing neglect and abuse of babies and children by their parents. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quantity and quality of social networks for pregnant women in Japan. 117 subjects in their final trimester of pregnancy agreed to participate. The subject filled out the questionnaire developed by us, listing not more than 20 persons who had some influence on her or had a significant relationship with her, regardless of whether she considered the relationship positive or negative. We evaluate the quantity and quality of the social network of each of the subjects according to four social network components: size, duration of relationship and frequency of contact with the pregnant woman, and distance from her residence. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify the explanatory variable with the most effect on the number of supportive members classified by ten factors: parity, degree of state anxiety, and etc. We found that frequency of contact with her most contributed as the explanatory variable on the number of supportive members classified in parity etc. We conclude, for example, pri-migravidas generally have a poorer quality of social support network than that of multigravidas in Japan.
