According to some feminist critics, the tragedy of Josie Hogan, the heroine in Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten, lies in the fact that, abandoning her own hopes and desires, she is forced to play the role of mother for Jim Tyrone in the end. If, however, one sees the theme of the rebirth of modern man and civilization in the play, Josie's real tragedy is that, in spite of all her plans and expectations, she is unable to become the 'mother' to give a new life to Jim, a representative of modern man. The aim of this paper is to study this last completed play of O'Neill in detail from the above-mentioned point of view and overthrow the established image of O'Neill argued by feminist critics - that of a sexist playwright who categorizes women as mothers in his plays.
