Around Hemingway's description of the sea, there swirls the afterimage of the Prussian blue sea of Japonism drawn by the Impressionists/Post-Impressionists and imagist poets like H.D. Generally speaking, Hemingway would often make a story by connecting catastrophic scenes of which images of a Japonistic sea was a typical example. It may be said that it is a skill all of his own and it forms a part of a unique charm of his literature.
