The Characteristics of Runoff Major Ions in Small Forested Watersheds

Major ions and nitrogen compounds were measured on a young planted forest watershed subject to runoff nutrients to estimate the buffering activities of the soil. The same analyses were measured from an adjacent mature cedar forest for comparison. Measurements of the pH of precipitation and throughfall showed that rainfall was slightly neutralized when it passed along the needles/leaves and branches through ion exchange processes. The pH of stream water in the young forest was mostly neutral despite the fact that rainfall pH was always less than 5. Comparison of major ions in rainfall, throughfall, and soil water from the two forest types revealed a difference in the buffering processes between the young forest and mature cedar forest. It was discovered that NO_3-N concentration of soil water in the young forest was much lower than that in the cedar forest watershed. However, runoff NO_3-N from the young forest watershed was greater than the results of other investigators, suggesting the possibility of impacts on water quality in downstream areas.
