The purpose of this paper is to understand what happened to Ryukyu in the early modern period. For this purpose, the following issues will be discussed : (1) peasants of mass immigration, (2) movement of a village, (3) villages and their servants, (4) economical conditions of a village and the peasant's life, (5) the role of a wealthy farmer, (6) the financial situation of a village, and so forth. However, it is not an easy task to clarify the process of a change in a village, because we have much difficulty in elucidating the strata structure of the community. Furthermore, it is much more difficult to recognize farmer's management scales and their method of making properties. Therefore, in this paper, I will approach these issues from the viewpoint of the change of economical and financial conditions in relation with villages from the late seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. Although this paper mainly deals with Okinawa and its surrounding islands, the villages and their peasants in Sakisima islands will be compared and discussed.
