Recently the TOEFL has changed from being a paper-based test to a computer-based test The TOEFL Computer-Based Test (CBT) combines familiar questions that were found on the paper test with new questions that are now possible because of the use of computers. The use of computers also allows for tailoring the level of questions to the level of the test taker. While there are a number of advantages by using a computer-based format of the test, there are also an equal number of concerns about the new format. How will the new changes affect studying strategies? What are the new challenges that need to be overcome? What are the new skills that are necessary in order to successfully take the TOEFL CBT? These concerns have made many teachers and students preparing for the TOEFL anxious about the new format and testing strategies. In order to cope with these issues and fully understand these new strategies, one must understand the new format. The presenter will look at the new format focusing particularly on the main differences between the paper-based and computer-based tests. The new computer format and question types will be examined and explained, as well as the new computer adaptive nature of test. The presenter will also focus on the new strategies that will be necessary for successfully taking the TOEFL and show a number of examples from the new testing format. Finally, the presenter will examine some resources that will help students to prepare for the new TOEFL CBT.
