This study analyzed the rhetorical discourse of a political chat event held under the auspices of Yahoo! JAPAN and Naoto Kan, president of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), on October 9, 2003. The text of questions and answers exchanged between Kan and the chat-participants was analyzed using close textual analysis. The outline of the chat event and how the organizer tried to influence participants' attitudes and to gain their support were investigated. The findings indicated that the main purpose of the chat event was to encourage the participants to vote for DPJ in the coming election. Further, the chat event was conducted in four stages: (1) general conversation, (2) conversation related to politics, (3) topics related to DPJ's political policies, (4) encouragement to vote for coming election. Implications for future political communication are discussed and recent political media strategies are considered.
