The purpose of this paper is to explore what kind of materials Japanese adult learners of English adopt for their self-study and how they use these. The results demonstrate that they seek as many opportunities as possible to keep in touch with English in their daily lives and take advantage of their involvement with it. Especially with regard to the use of SIB (self-instructional broadcast) materials, such as radio and television language programs, more than 70 percent of the subjects listen to/ watch those programs. Their positive attitudes toward self-study might be a trigger for the suggestion of life-long education in language learning and show a sort of role model of an autonomous learner.
