Tennyson's poems after 1850, when he became Poet Laureate, are not so remarkable except Idylls of the King and Enoch Arden, because as he was regarded as a person organized in Establishment, people tended to think his works were also establishmentarian. I wonder if he ignored his own feelings and set great value on English State, though he was patriotic. I guess that he continued to have his own theory or idea of life. In 1889, 3 years before his death, Tennyson's Demeter and Other Poems was published. I selected 5 poems from its book: 'Demeter and Persephone', 'Happy', 'Romney's Remorse', 'Merlin and the Gleam' and 'Crossing the Bar'. Through the analysis of them I suggested that Tennyson's ideas of an artist, life and death are consistent, though they are based on the actual world more strongly than them in his young age. key words : artist, life, death
