This study reported on the effects of physical play activities in a class called "Let's Exercise" held in day-care nurseries. We offered them many kinds of movements and played together with one-year-olds, one and a half-year-olds, and two-year-old-children. We used play instruments such as a balance bar, jumping box, mats, other play tools and big and small cardboard boxes. It was about thirty minutes per class from May to March last year. One-year-old-children imitated our activities at the beginning, but they found their favorite play activities by themselves after seven classes. Two-year-old-children played vividly together with their friends and teachers. We recognized that there are three aspects of teachers' help. One concerns the structure of the environment. The next thing concerns movement. It's important to do many things. The last thing concerns their minds. We and these nurseries set play instruments, and then we reset them matching their movements. We suggested methods of play to them. Also we helped them to do activities using play tools. We urged them to try difficult movements. We gave words of praise to them when we caught their movements or they found a new method of play. We watched them to be sure they played in safety. We were watching them to help as soon as they felt it was too dangerous.
