The main objective of this study is to examine pre-modern Japanese psychiatry, looking at notional changes in classification and their corresponding cases in an age before strictly objective classification was practiced. It is concluded that, before the advent of strictly objective observation, many cases of "ten" and "kyo" remained largely undifferentiated ; the work of differentiating, naming, and classification fell largely to the work of Edo era psychiatrists ; further, many of these notions and classifications may find their roots in ancient and middle age Chinese records.
