The classical Japanese narrative The Tale ofGenji is commonly read as a story of love life of Hikaru Genji. However, the tale also includes many illnesses and deaths, especially after the "New Herbs" chapter, as well as some cases of apparent mental illness. In this study, I first comment on the types of mental illness and their psychopathology focusing on "chest trouble", mononoke and ashinoke (kakubyo). They are mainly psychogenetic and psychosomatic disorders. I consider the way in which Hikaru Genji character is formed in the first place as well. I then propose a reading of The Tale of Genji as a historical source text for psychiatry, considering to the psychopathology of the tale as a whole and its themes.
