Purpose : The viability of the organ graft is the most important issue in organ transplantation. Easy and continuous evaluation of the graft viability before pancreatic transplantation has not been established yet. The dielectric properties represented with tanδm reflected the structural and physiological changes of various organs. We previously reported the correlation of the changes of dielectric properties of the heart, liver, and kidney, with their tissue ATP. In this study, we investigated whether the changes of dielectric properties of the pancreas could be correlated with its tissue ATP, and the viability of the pancreas graft during warm ischemia. Materials and Methods : Administration of vecronium induced apnea, and then cardiac arrest in Lewis rats. The pancreas was exposed to warm ischemia defined as the period from cardiac arrest to harvest for 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes (n=9 each). After harvesting, pancreatic tissue ATP was measured with a high performance liquid chromatograph. Electrical impedance was measured using a impedance analyzer. The Lewis pancreas was harvested at 4.5, 4.0 and 3.5 (n=6) of tanδm during warm ischemia, and then transplanted into the isogeneic rat with streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia. Result : 1) Tanδm was correlated with ATP in the pancreas tissue. 2) At 4.5 of tanδm, the survival rate of the pancreatic transplanted graft was 100%. The survival rates of 4.0 and 3.5 were 33.3% and 16.7%, respectively. Conclusion : These results suggested that the dielectric properties might be useful to evaluate the viability of pancreas under warm ischemia.
