[PURPOSE] The purpose of this study is to elucidate morphological changes of microcirculation during reperfusion after normothermic ischemia in the liver. [METHODS] The liver in the rat was observed with the charge-coupled device (CCD) microscope. They were classified into the following 3 groups depending on the duration of the ischemic time : 15 minute group (n=6), 30 minute group (n=6) and 60 minute group (n=6). Sinusoids were observed with CCD microscope before ischemia and 60 minutes after reperfusion. We evaluated the volume fraction (Vv) ([total perfused sinusoidal area] / [total observed area]) as perfusion status and surface /volume ratio (S/V) [total perimeter of sinusoid /total perfused sinusoidal area] × 100) as hepatocyte blood supply in sinusoids of the reperfused livers. [RESULTS] Vv were significantly decreased and S/V were significantly increased in them after 30 and 60 minute ischemia. [CONCLUSION] These results indicated that ischemia for 30 minutes induced morphological changes detected with CCD microsccope during reperfusion but that for 15 minutes did not.
