(1). The neutral oil of low temperature tar can be hydrogenated by direct hydrogenation with molecular hydrogen under high temperature and pressure, but can not be saturated completely. (2). The hydrogenating reaction is the most active just below the reaction temperature, and above that decomposition takes place. (3). So far as the sample taken is concerned, 75 atmospheres of the initial pressure is the lowest limit for hydrogenation, and an increase of the initial pressure makes the hydrogenation profitable. (4). So long as the reaction is continued, the hydrogenation proceeds below the reaction temperature, while above that, decomposition proceeds. (5). Nickel oxide has a remarkable effect in aiding hydrogenation, and if added sufficiently, the oil can be nearly saturated. (6). Ferric oxide has also a favourable effect, but far weaker than that of nickel oxide. Copper oxide and magnesium oxide have little effect. (7). Zinc oxide has an effect in decreasing the iodine value without changing other properties. (8). Aluminium oxide seems to give no effect but rather accelerates decomposition.
