In recent years, the academic level of university students has generally dropped, which has been a matter of grave concern among many university teachers. Also in Nishikyushu University, the poor English abilities of students have become a subject of discussion. We may say that various factors have combined to produce the present situation : the popularization of a university, the drop of a birthrate, the diversification of assessment criteria from multiple angles, and so on. The more direct cause in Nishikyushu University is that English was changed into an elective examination subject for the applicants for Department of Social Welfare Science in the academic year of the 6th year of Heisei. The total number of applicants for the university has been decreasing year by year, and as a result, the number of students who were examined in English has been declining. What I wish to show in this paper is the following. First, whether students were examined in English or not correlates closely with their basic abilities in English. Secondly, the analysis of students' evaluation shows that the introduction of the class organization based on English proficiency works well to meet diverse needs of students.
