Studies on the vertical distribution of ants was carried out in the southern district of of the Hidaka Mountains, which were lacking in myrmecological data. In this expeditional studies, 26 species of ants were collected from Mts. Petegari, Apoi and Rakko. Most of them were the species widely distributed in Hokkaido; further the typical mountain ants, such as Leptothorax acervorum and Myrmica kurokii, were also discovered on the slopes of relatively high altitude. The vertical distribution of ants would be characterized as mixed or overlapped distribution pattern between mountainous and lowland elements, probably due to the relatively low altitude and the high timber-line.
