In late autumn of 1968,seismic reflection measurements were carried out on the continental shelf around the Tsushima Islands. The following results were obtained. 1) A sedimentary basin was discovered on the continental shelf off Shimane Prefecture. The sedimentary basin is assumed to be an extension of the Western Sanin Sedimentary Basin from its geographical situation and thickness of the unconsolidated sediment up to about one kilometer. This area has a possibility to contain mineral resources, particularly petroleum and natural gas. 2) Two sedimentary basins were discovered on the continental shelf SSW and NNE of the Tsushima Islands. The thickness of unconsolidated sediments in these areas exceeds 400 meters. The relation between the two basins failed to be clarified because no survey was made in the west of the islands. However, it is possible that a geosynclinal belt connects these sedimentary basins along the trough running parallel to the west coast of the Tsushima Islands. The geosynclinal belt will be very important geotectonically, if this hypothesis is true and verified by the same writers in the near future after analysis of the seismic data obtained on the continental shelf west of Kyushu, Japan, in 1968 and west of Tsushima in June, 1969.
