A total of 18 species, 2 varieties and 5 forms of Viola were collected in the Rikuchu district in May of 1967. Viola Selkirkii PURSH from the northern side of Mt. Hayachine has larger leaves and flowers than those of other districts in Japan and the adjacent areas, besides little different rhizomes and sepals. Statistics of V. Selkirkii was made on length and width of 411 leaves of 115 individuals with chasmogamic flowers and of 176 leaves of 43 individuals with cleistogamic flowers, and floral parts of 151 chasmogamic flowers were measured. From the results shown in a scatter diagram (Fig. 1) and Tables 1 and 2,it is revealed that V. Selkirkii from the northern side of Mt. Hayachine is quite different from the typical form and can be considered as a local form. W. BECKER described V. biacuta in 1917 based on Faurie No. 150-13001 collected at Hakodate. According to him, this species has pubescent, biacute sepal-appendages and thick, articulate rhizomes, and the peduncles are not higher than the leaves. Specimens of V. Selkirkii collected in Rikuchu district, especially at the vicinity of Mt. Hayachine, agree well with BECKER'S description. Re-examination of the type specimen, however, is necessary to solve the problem on the nomenclature of V. Selkirkii and V. biacuta.
