BALUCHIMYINE RODENTS FROM THE ZINDA PIR DOME, WESTERN PAKISTAN : SYSTEMATIC AND BIOCHRONOLOGIC IMPLICATIONS

• This preliminary analysis of the ten rodent species in the small mammal fauna of locality Z 108 from the Zinda Pir Dome of western Pakistan focuses on the Baluchimyinae, the major component of the fauna. Isolated teeth representing six species are described in detail. Four new species are named, with new genera erected for two of them. The material includes dental elements that were previously poorly represented, which enables some clarification on problematical specimen assignments, on content of the group, and on discussion of features characteristic of the taxon Baluchimyinae. It remains unclear whether baluchimyines retain deciduous premolars through adult life, as do Hystricognathi. This fauna shows a high degree of similarity to the Bugti small mammal assemblage from locality 417,in stark contrast to the late early Miocene lower Siwalik faunas. Z 108 taxa are identical with or slightly advanced with respect to Bugti taxa.
