The growth habit of branches in 425 tropical tree species growing in different habitats in West Java are investigated. The morphological characteristics, which characterize the tropical environment, include buttress, cauliflory, strangler, and so on. Buttress, cauliflory, and strangler are seen in about 90% of families and 40% of species investigated in the Bogor Botanic Garden. Other adaptive characteristics of tropical tree species are observed : (1) There are seen some forms of shoot-tip of trees, such as scaly buds, naked buds, intermediate type between scaly and naked buds and shoot-tip fallen. The frequency of the forms of shoot-tip was very similar in the two areas with different altitudes and tree species. (2) About 40% of trees investigated have ever-growing shoots, and the remaining have rhythmic growth. (3) About 80% of species have simple leaves, and the remaining have compound leaves. The most frequent type of compound leaves is impari-pinnate and about half of them has a scar or small scaly leaf at the position of the distal leaflet. More than 60% of species show simultaneously two or three among the growth phenomena such as flowering, fruiting, falling of leaves, and new shoot-sprouting in the same tree. In particular, 15% of species in Bogor Botanic Garden showed all these four growth phenomena at the same time.
