The soil is an important natural resource and vital sustainable agricultural development. The Bureau of Soil and Water Management (BSWM) was organized as a staff bureau of the Department of Agriculture, the Philippines, to conduct soil resources survey; agricultural land evaluation, soil conservation and management, testing, and research. Its mandate was broadened in 1987 to include development and generation of water resources utilization and conservation technologies as well as inclusion of rainmaking projects to alleviate the impacts of prolonged drought on standing crops. It is presently undergoing a reorganization to reorient its functions in line with the Agriculture Modernization Act of 1998. In addition to strengthening its agrohydrology engineering function, as well as focus on information technology specially the application of Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing on agricultural land evaluation. The Soil Museum and Exhibition Section under the Soil Geography and Classification Division is being established to collect, classify, preserve, and exhibit soil profiles of major soils of the country and thereby provide information on its geographic distribution, natural history and diversity, and best management options for sustainable agricultural production. The BSWM Soil Museum is still in the establishment phase and in addition to the soil monolith collections, different types of soil texture and soil structure will form part of the permanent exhibit. There will be a regularly changing thematic exhibit. Furthermore, important collections will be made available in the BSWM Web Page under the Virtual Soil Museum Section for access in the internet. BSWM is still in the process of securing the services of an Internet Service Provider to join the world wide web.
