The Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR) was established in 1990 and belongs to the National Center for Natural Science and Technology (NCNST), which is directly dependent on the Government of Vietnam. The predecessor of IEBR was the Center of Ecology and Biological Resources, which was formed in 1985. In the past, the biological fundamental researches were carried out by the Department of Geography-Biology in a period from 1960 to 1975,and then by the Institute of Biology in a period from 1975 to 1985,whose members are the leading persons of the present Institute. At present, IEBR is divided into 16 divisions with 119 staff members including 7 professors, 5 associate professors, 43 doctors and 64 masters, bachelors or technicians. In the herbarium belonging to the Department of Botany are kept about 700,000 plant samples, and over 30,000 animal specimens (vertebrates and invertebrates) are preserved in the Zoological Museum. IEBR works in cooperation with many institutions of foreign countries such as USA, Russia, France, Germany, Australia, China, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Czech, Belgium, etc. From the next year, 2001,we are drawing up a project of the joint research on the fauna of Vietnam with the National Science Museum, Tokyo.
