Botanical reference collections in Indonesia are mostly based in two important institutes, namely, Herbarium Bogoriense and the Botanic Gardens of Indonesia. The two institutes are complementary to each other and are organized by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Herbarium Bogoriense is dealing with herbarium, spirit and fossil collections, while the Botanic Gardens of Indonesia are dealing with living collections. The Botanic Gardens of Indonesia comprise four botanic gardens, namely, Bogor Botanic Garden, Cibodas Botanic Garden, Purwodadi Botanic Garden and Bali Botanic Garden, and they maintain important living botanical references in Indonesia. In this paper I describe the features of these institutes and the current status of the collections.
