The phytodiversity in Nepal, the Central Himalayan region, is very interesting to study, as it is the result of influence of diverse geography, altitude and climate. It has been enthusiastically explored and investigated by several botanists in the world since 1783. This paper highlights on the role of Department of Plant Resources (DPR), which was established in 1960 under His Majesty's Government of Nepal (HMG), Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation (MOFSC). It is the only authoritative organization to deal with the development of plant resources in the country, being responsible for the conservation of endangered, threatened, rare and endemic plant species. The Royal Botanical Garden and seven District Botanical Conservatories have been established in different phytogeographic belts (Tropical to Alpine : ranging between 240 to 4000m) of the country. Among the seven, Maipokhari on the eastern, Hetauda in the central and Jumla on the western areas are quite interesting to study plant diversity in the kingdom. The National Herbarium and Plant Laboratories, Godavary (KATH), under DPR, is responsible for collection, identification of plants, and preserve plant diversities. The section Phanerogams is responsible for flowering plants while the section Cryptogams is responsible for fungi and ferns. There are some other sections also to conduct researches on different plant groups. The plants, which have been gathered by foreign botanists and in collaboration with DPR since 1963,have been preserved. Till now 5838 flowering and 4064 non flowering plants have been recorded from Nepal. About 150,000 specimens of Phanerogams and 9,000 specimens of lower groups with some type and isotype specimens are preserved. The status of studies on Nepalese fungi is commented briefly. A recently established project "Nepal Flora Implementation Project" invites the collaborators, contributors and researchers to strengthen activities of our institution and publish "Flora of Nepal" both on Cryptogams and Phanerogams.
