The Philippine National Museum, located in the center of Manila, houses one of the most important plant systematic resource in the country, i. e. the Philippine National Herbarium. It is the largest and the oldest herbarium in the country, with history dating back to the early 1900's. This famous institution was the pet project of the American botanist, Dr. Elmer Merrill who built the institution from scratch. Under his supervision Merrill was able to amass more than 1 million plant specimens representing Philippines and extra-Philippine specimens acquired mainly through collection exchange and donations. Included in the collections were several hundreds of valuable type specimens described from the country. Aside from the herbarium was a rich botanical library that contains numerous taxonomic books and journals from here and abroad. Tragedy struck the institution when the entire Bureau of Science building, which housed the herbarium and library, among other offices and laboratories of the government, was totally razed to the ground during the Second World War. Soon after the war the herbarium was rehabilitated by the Director of the National Museum, Dr. Eduardo Quisumbing. Under his supervision the herbarium collection gradually increased, until it reached to more than 200,000 specimens to date. A botanical library was also established with initial funds coming from UNESCO. To date the present Philippine National Herbarium is on its way to full rehabilitation. However, funds are badly needed to support field exploration and plant collection especially in botanically-rich areas of the country. With the recent designation of a permanent building for the National Museum, the herbarium is now secured in its present location at the former Congress building at the heart of Manila. To provide for ample space for the ever increasing plant collections, and to give decent office and laboratory spaces for the scientific staff, and to provide for bigger exhibit areas the Botany and Zoology Divisions of the National Museum will be transferred to the present Department of Tourism building just across the famous Rizal Park in Manila.
