Bogor Zoological Museum established in 1894 as a section of 's Lands Plantentuin. In the early years, the research was focused on insects which were the main pests of agriculture. The Bogor Zoological Museum has changed the name to the Zoological Division, the Research and Development Centre for Biology-Indonesian Institute of Sciences. However the name of Bogor Zoological Museum still exists because this name has been well recognized by international scientists compared to the Zoological Division, RDCB. All research activities are integrated into three main research groups, i. e. biosystematics, ecology and physiology. At present it maintains about more than 2 millions identified specimens. Most of the specimens were collected from various islands throughout Indonesia by staff of the Bogor Zoological Museum, while the remaining came from exchanges and purchase, and few were donated by other institutions. Many specimens have been collected, stored, and waiting for scientific treatment in the year to come. The collection is frequently used by local and foreign researchers and it is one of the well recognized collections of fauna in Southeast Asia. The Bogor Zoological Museum moved from Bogor to the new building in Cibinong in 1997. The new building was constructed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). All the collection was well stabilized before being transferred to Cibinong. Stabilization, rehabilitation and reorganization of reference collections were carried out under the auspices of the GEF-Biodiversity Collections Project/World Bank. All specimens were arranged in the new cabinets, compactors and racks. All the identified specimens had been processed according to standard method, and kept in main collection. The activities are done continuously. Regular monitoring on pest infection of the collection was carried out in a standar procedure. Specimens being catalogued and registered in computer database for scientific purpose. The specimens database are organized in the centre of biodiversity information in Cibinong. The main problem of zoological collection is in its identification due to dearth of references and reliable literature. From the very beginning, the Museum is sadly lacking many qualified zoologists to identify these available specimens, to study their occurences in the archipelago and its known distribution and many other attributes. The international cooperation networks could be planned in the future due to shortage of Indonesian taxonomists in various groups.
