One of the most famous natural history research museums in Southeast Asia in the early part of the 20th century was the Raffles Museum in Singapore. This museum and its primarily zoological collection, has had a difficult time, been without a permanent home for some 18 years, and for 28 years, it was simply known as the Zoological Reference Collection of the National University of Singapore. Recently, this collection, the staff in the university involved in biodiversity research as well as the university's herbarium and mycological collections were consolidated into the Raffles Museum for Biodiversity Research (RMBR). The original research mandate of the museum to further biodiversity research for the region is continued. Public education of biodiversity, a role the museum forsook since 1970,is now re-established as a major responsibility. With an extensive reference library, over 400,000 sorted specimens, modern facilities and trained expertise, the RMBR is well positioned to help bring greater awareness to as well as aid in solutions to the problems facing biodiversity in Southeast Asia. Challenges confronting biodiversity specialists in the region are many, and include lack of well trained personnel over the long term, lack of sustained and well curated collections, lack of literature, difficulties in disseminating data, and general lack of governmental commitment to develop biodiversity research to its full potential. The most effective means of upgrading the value and scientific importance of regional museums is the development of a strong research program, regular publishing, commitment to academic meritocracy and globalisation of biodiversity information.
