This study documents discovery of the first small mammal fossils from Sulawesi, two isolated lower molars recovered from the Walanae Formation at Lakibong in the southwestern peninsula. The teeth are identifiable as examples of Paruromys dominator, the largest bodied extant murid recorded from the island. Discovery of this species preserved in the Walanae Formation implies that it has had a long endemic history on Sulawesi, possibly extending back to the Late Pliocene. Recovery of the fossils also demonstrates that a more comprehensive fossil record of rodents and other small mammals can be produced in the future on Sulawesi by recovering fossilized elements through conventional wet-screening sampling techniques.
