A new dendromurine rodent, Mabokomys lindsayi, gen. & sp. nov., is described from the middle Miocene site of Maboko Island, Kenya. This taxon is significant in being the oldest radiometrically dated African dendromurine currently known. The Mabokomys M^1 is from Maboko Bed 5,which underlies a tuff dated by laser fusion ^<40>Ar/^<39>Ar techniques at 14.71±0.16 Ma. Diagnostic characters of Mabokomys include its relatively large size, reduced mures, transversely oriented major cusps, unequally bilobed anterocone, and large enterostyle on a prominent lingual cingulum. Phylogenetic analysis of Mabokomys, Myocricetodon, and several taxa that have been variously assigned to the Dendromurinae (Ternania, Potwarmus, Senoussimys, Paradakkamys, and Dakkamys), suggests Mabokomys is the sister taxon to Potwarmus + (Ternania + Senoussimys).
