It is now widely appreciated that magnetostratigraphic analyses of nonmarine stratigraphic sections containing key vertebrate fossil assemblages can provide geochronologic calibration of land mammal ages and refined knowledge of rates and modes of evolution. Initial success occurred in geochronologic calibration of late Neogene North American land mammal ages through magnetostratigraphic study of the Benson Beds of southeastern Arizona. More than a decade of subsequent research on Late Cretaceous and Paleocene deposits of North America demonstrated that the method could be applied to a much wider range of geologic time than initially thought possible. Beyond a third objective of establishing the evolutionary chronology of Asian mammals, magnetostratigraphic studies of the Siwalik deposits of Pakistan led to critical insights into the tectonic development of the Himalayas. Through nearly 30 years of collaborative research with paleomagnetists, Everett Lindsay contributed significantly to the development of magnetostratigraphy as a geochronologic method.
