We report an important effect of the azimuthal alignment error on the dynamics of pure homeotropic liquid crystal cells. The flow of liquid crystal together with the azimuthal alignment error, causes the twist structure of the directors in the rising period. Our simulation shows that even a small azimuthal error of 0.02° still influences the transient optical property of the cell. The simulation and experimental results are described in this letter. We also describe the origin of the flow-induced twist effect. This information is useful for the manufacture of the fast homeotropic liquid crystal devices.
