Specimens of the Cordyceps species on the wasp Vespula schrenckii were studied morphologically and phylogenetically. They were tentatively identified as C. sphecocephala and C. oxycephala, due to their morphological characteristics of stromata and ascospores. However, the results of phylogenetic study on rDNA sequence revealed that there was a slight difference between the two species, and implied that these species were conspecific. Our results strongly supported the taxonomic proposal by Kobayasi (1982), where C. oxycephala was treated as a form of C. sphecocephala.
