There are nine exploration and/or development projects in Sakhalin Island shelf in the Russian Far East, and two oil/gas projects out of them, Sakhalin I and II, are actually being developed. Sakhalin Island, located to the north of Japan, is only about 1,300 km away from Tokyo. Its proximity to Asia Pacific markets is one of the competitive advantages that Sakhalin projects have. Also, Sakhalin's abundant and high quality reserve, some 200TCF of natural gas and 60 billion barrels of crude oil in place, is another advantage to Asia Pacific markets which rely heavily on Middle East energy resources. Sakhalin I Project, led by ExxonMobil, declared its development of Chaivo Field in April of 2003 and started drilling in July. On the other hand, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company, operating Sakhalin II Project, has been producing crude oil from Piltun-Astokhskoye field since 1999. Sakhalin Energy Investment Company progresses the construction works in and out of Sakhalin Island in line with planned LNG production start-up in 2nd half of 2007.
