If we take a general view of natural gas situation in the northern Eurasia, we can note that there are two prominent markets at either end of the region: the European market, which has been in existence for several decades, and the Chinese market, which is now emerging the twenty-first century progresses. Between these two markets lie Siberia and Central Asia, an area of plentiful but remote natural deposits. It is now clear that a new gas pipeline from East Siberia to China will soon commence construction. However the official Chinese policy on how this new energy flow will be managed is as yet unclear. China currently seems to give priority to its indigenous gas reserves over Siberian or Central Asian supplies. However due to rapid growth of gas consumption in China, its domestic reserves will be unable to match future demand. In order development in Central Asia, Turkmenistan is now supplying Russia with natural gas and Azerbaijan is considering supplying Turkey, although there is concern over the instability of the Turkish economy. In addition, as the development of Karachaganak and Kashagan fields continue, Kazakhstan will also become an important gas supplier in this region.
