The average demand for hot tap water is about 1/3 of the total final energy consumption for residential in Japan. And almost all of its demand result into the direct combustion of fossil fuel. Therefore, development of high performance heat pump water heater is required in the market from energy saving viewpoint. At the same time, development of heat pumps with natural working fluids is required from environmental protection viewpoint as well. Under such circumstances, a CO_2 refrigerant heat pump hot water heater system (so-called ECO CUTE in Japan) for residential usage was newly developed and commercialized in 2001. The system requires advanced technologies such as high performance compressor, high performance heat exchanger and optimized high side pressure control method for transcritical CO_2 refrigerant cycle. The newly developed system reduces the energy consumption by 30% compared to the gas combustion system from the amount of electric power generation viewpoint. Furthermore a new system operated in cold regions was additionally developed in 2002. Recently a new system with more effective and higher heating capacity by applying ejector to CO_2 refrigerant cycle and with multi-function has been developing and putting into the market.
