In recent ten years, increasing rate of home energy consumption in Japan has reached to 137 %, which is more than that of factories or offices. A national project for home energy management started in 2000 FY in order to control total machines and equipment and to reduce the idling electric power consumption using home networks. In 2002 FY, the prototype elements and systems were designed and developed. This paper reports the prototype system development and the associated test results. The target values of electric power reduction in comparison with the new systems and the conventional systems are 20 %. Optimal control system for energy conservation and distributed control terminals incorporated with ECHONET^<TM> network interface were developed. The performance tests clarified that all network adapters incorporated with power monitoring and optimum control functions have successfully worked together irrelevant to electric household appliance manufacturers. Wireless mobile interface was also developed to monitor and control the equipment operation. Control schemes are operation control by human detection, temperature-swing air conditioning, the combined control between lamps and air conditioners, and the sleep/absent mode controls. By the end of 2003 FY, the first commercial type of HEMS (Home Energy Management System) will appear and work effectively.
