A Progressive Control Method for ROI in JPEG2000(International Workshop on Advanced Image Technology 2006)

For an application of surveillance cameras, there may be a specific region on which they should focus. In such a case, region of interest (ROI) is one of important features for image compression standard like JPEG2000. In some case of the JPEG2000 ROI coding, especially low bit coding, most of the encoding data is occupied by the code of ROI and then the image quality of background regions is severely degraded. To solve this problem, several methods have been proposed. Watanabe and Kiya have proposed a two-path method. In this method, first coding path is used for the rate control and second one for ROI coding. However the wavelet basis of this method is restricted to the 5/3 integer wavelet and it takes extra computational costs. Relative image quality control between ROI and background regions cannot be specified. In this paper, an implementation method of the ROI coding based on JPEG2000 by using ROI masks is proposed. The ROI mask means the parameter which specifies the ROI region in each subband. The proposed method can realize the progressive image quality control between ROI and background regions by one-path processing. The decoded data can be encoded by the standard encoder of JPEG 2000 part 1.
