Plasma renin activity (PRA), Plasma concentration of aldosterone (Ald), Epinephrine (Epi) and Norepinephrine (NE) were measured in 64 patients undergoing open-heart surgery including 22 aorto-coronary bypass grafting cases (ACB), 19 aortic valve replacement cases (AVR) and 23 mitral valve replacement cases (MVR). Following results were obtained: significant difference in alterations of renin-angiotensine-aldosterone system (PRA and Ald) and catecholamine system (Epi and NE) was found in ACB, AVR and MVR groups during open heart surgery. PRA and AId were increased markedly in MVR group, not in AVR and ACB groups. Epi and NE were increased markedly in ACB group, but not in AVR and MVR groups. It was suspected that pre-existing cardiac failure affected these results.
