The Playboy riots may be brushed aside as nationalist repulsion or mob censorship, but Synge the playwright makes much of violence on the stage and makes every use of it in The Playboy of the Western World. The play is violent in its plot and speech with villagers' glorification of a patricide as hero because of his 'gallous story', until it comes to the disclosure of its falsehood and ends in 'a dirty deed'. The former part is 'extravagant comedy' with the patricide and villagers indulging each other in the gallous story, while the latter is 'perfectly serious' with its violent action. The myth-making extravaganza and the serious drama are not discordantly mixed, but are juxtaposed according to Synge's way of seeing and his grotesque tragi-comic style which comprise diametrical opposition with the resultant violence. Violence in The Playboy is, therefore, an essential manifestation of Synge's man and art.
