Data can be erased due to head/disk contact that may occur during load/unload operations. Two forms of data loss can be observed: mechanical damage to the magnetic layer and thermal erasure with the latter being observed only on glass substrates with very low thermal conductivity. These forms of data loss can be avoided by properly designing the system that control the disk speed, load/unload speed, and the radius of curvature of the corners of the slider. This paper addresses some key design points to decrease the probability of thermal erasure when using glass substrates.
