Ophiopogon japonicus (dwarf lily turf), a member of family Liliaceae, conventrated in the tropical and subtropical region of eastern and southern Asia, has been used in traditional medicine in China. As a part of our continuous search for allelopathic ground cover plants, we have examined the methanol extract of root of O. japonicus. This paper describes the bioassay directed isolation and characterization of allelopathic constituents of O. japonicus and an examination of their allelopathic potential on lettuce seedlings.
