This paper deals with the modeling and scheduling of autonomous distributed manufacturing systems. A modeling method is proposed by using Colored Petri nets, and some dispatching rules for scheduling are described as are expressions to resolve various conflicting transitions in the model. A basic module is proposed to represent the physical configuration of a machining cell, and the model of the whole system is constructed by connecting several such modules. A prototype of the modeling system is developed by PROLOG. The proposed modeling system has these advantages: the model can be easily built up and modified; the structure of the model is simple; the data-base and the rule-base can be easily modified to cope with the variation of the manufacturing information.
